History: Imagine a world similar to our own in almost every conceivable way. History is by and large the same, politics are the familiar mess, culture is still as we know it, essentially, a normal world. However, on top of that, there is some supernatural element, not precisely hidden, just by and large not acknowledged unless necessary and left mostly to those beings that inhabit it by definition, rather than any choice. Those supernatural entities might be mythological creatures, or literal demons, and it even extends to humans with magical or psychic powers. Overall, these supernatural entities are too secretive, too disparate, and too farflung to make any real impact on history.

Jun’ichi Gotou is his birth name, according to hospital records, but that is by and large all that was left to him by his birth parents. They died in a car accident; some say it was an arranged yakuza hit, but nobody was willing to come forward to make that accusation. The young boy was taken in by the monks of a local shrine; particularly, one of them had been friends with the Gotou family before swearing off a more secular life, and felt it was only proper that a family friend take the boy in. It started a trend; before too long the shrine had three young children of roughly the same age wandering its halls. The two girls, Hotaru and Seimei were both gifted magically; Jun'ichi completely lacked such skills, but if it upset the young boy he never showed it. Things were happy enough.

The three were as close as could be. Jun'ichi didn’t let the notion that his best friends were girls bug him when playing with other kids, and often found himself in scrapes when the two were teased, especially the sickly albino Seimei. He went to school as per normal, and Hotaru followed, with Seimei being kept at the shrine largely due to her terrible health and incredibly potent supernatural powers making normal life difficult for her. Still, the three were nearly inseparable when they could be. This frankly made puberty kind of terrible, as suddenly Jun'ichi was aware his two best friends were women, and seemingly both of them were attracted to him. He could never make up his own mind, it turned out, though as time went on it seemed like Seimei lost interest in him, and he and Hotaru got closer.

Ultimately, Jun'ichi’s attempts to live a simple life cut disastrously short around the time he was sixteen. The events were never especially clarified: some thought it was a hit that went wrong and innocents had been struck in the crossfire, others feared it was a hit that targeted one of the shrine maidens, most likely Seimei, and had struck Hotaru instead. The bottom line was the three orphans were now two. While he hadn’t been present for the killing, it was Jun'ichi that found Seimei and the dead Hotaru that day. Nothing could have been done, though there was no reassurance that made Jun’ichi feel that maybe, just maybe, he could have been faster and things would have gone differently.

The realization ate at him. He coasted on his grades, barely passing, and fell out of both his part-time job and his after school activities. It might have just been a long, hard grieving process if it had ended there. Maybe in another world, Jun’ichi went so far as to become a cop or a defense attorney in her memory. But one of the monks let slip at that point that several people at the time had thought that his own parents’ death was thought to possibly related to the same yakuza family that was suspected of killing Hotaru.

With that revelation, something in the young man snapped. He effectively dropped out of school, instead doing his damnedest to be taken in a chinpira by the family. He was the most enthusiastic recruit the family could have dreamed of, taking jobs that anyone else balked at without a second thought. His rise through the ranks was meteoric and assured, and before too long he had been sworn into brotherhood. This afforded him the protection of the same organization that he secretly loathed, which ironically made him above suspicion on anything that he did. Over the next three years, Jun'ichi developed a reputation for being the man who could get any job done, and for being absolutely no luck for partners on his jobs, with an unprecedented mortality rate. Of course, a lot of those deaths were inflicted by none other than Jun'ichi himself, but in mostly plausibly deniable routes.

This isn’t to say that it didn’t weigh on his mind, to kill those other men. On some level, he had always known no amount of death was going to make up for those that he had lost, and he was arousing suspicion. It was a surprising move, then, when he was tasked with keeping an eye on the teenaged daughter of one of the bosses, a girl who seemed by and large completely unconcerned with the day-to-day affairs of his employers but rather on enjoying the money that her father’s lifestyle afforded her. She was sixteen, the same he had been three years ago when he had joined, and the two found a surprising friendship in one another. Still, Jun'ichi feared what this new assignment brought.

He didn’t have to fear long. A friend inside passed word to him at the risk of his own life that the girl and her family were marked by one of the other branches, and Jun'ichi would either die with them or be burned and probably killed later for failing to protect his charge. The idea that he was trapped ate him, but what burned worse was the fact that a relatively innocent girl was going to die because of his own ruthless methods. He had only one real option; he’d heard rumors, when he was young, before he left the shrine, of a witch who granted wishes for those willing to trade something else. Any price would be fair, he figured.

Personality: To put it bluntly, Jun’ichi is a goddamn mess. Years of work as a yakuza agent with his own secret agenda have required him to develop an emotionally competent and even somewhat friendly if aloof facade. He’s friendly enough, always willing to pitch in and help with problems that arise, although he does sometimes venture past good-natured ribbing into just being a jerk. He’s good about remembering names and details about other people; he’ll even spring for birthday gifts and little treats at random of tchotchke gifts and junk food. This often gives the impression of being considerate or at least a good listener, but if one pays attention to him, he’s actually rather expert at not talking about himself in any detail. This isn’t to say he’s a liar. He’s just learned how to invariably redirect all conversation back around to the other person, and to keep the responses about himself mostly down to topical, day-to-day things. Sure, he’ll pepper in the occasional anecdote, usually if he thinks it’ll get them to talk more about themselves. But, given how he’s spent the last three years doing everything in his power not to talk about his past, Jun’ichi is not going to start gushing about himself unless he has a very good reason to.

And beyond that friendly yet rather bland surface layer, there’s a surprisingly bullheaded and hot-tempered young man with a mess of emotional issues. Jun’ichi is not the sort to get openly angry without very severe provocation, but he is the kind to keep a shitlist, and once he has decided to hold a grudge it is nearly impossible to get him to let go of this. Even more terrifyingly, very little changes, other than the fact that he isn’t quite as friendly, the gifts go away. This is because he’s looking for a way to screw over this person and get away with it. While it bothers him that he has such a knack for backstabbing and murder, Jun’ichi recognizes that he is quite good at it: and he is not the sort that will let his talents go to waste, if he feels like the other person warranted it. That said, he’s more likely to complain to bosses that someone isn’t pulling their weight, or find a way to screw them out of choice jobs on the island if possible. After all, this meant to be a new beginning, and even Jun’ichi’s hoping that he doesn’t have to resort to violence ever again. Fat chance of that happening.

Jun’ichi is very big on saying that he accepts the consequences of his actions, no matter what may come of them. In reality, he is acutely aware he is in over his head and drowning. Emotionally, Jun’ichi is not especially stunted, because that would be far too convenient. He is painfully clear on amount of variety of suffering that he has caused over the last three years, and moreover that even if it hadn’t been largely just in the name of revenge, even if he had managed to kill the people responsible, that these actions do not make Hotaru any less dead. He is exceptionally talented at hiding the fact that this eats at him, sure. And yes, with a life of servitude for the next few years at least, comes time to calm down, finally grieve, and plan his next move while he sorts through this bagge. But for any of the poor bastards who really go out of their way to break through the false front he puts up and befriend him, they will find that he is ultimately a wreck.

Debt: Jun'ichi's wish was initially simple; he wanted to have undone his entire involvement with the local yakuza, which would save himself and the girl. Ultimately,he was upsold on the idea of wishing for the life he could have had, “if everything had gone right instead” – with the fullest implications of that statement left unexplained to him.

Suitability: For a guy who grew up in a shrine, Jun’ichi’s going to have some issues with the idea of working surrounded by spirits. After all, he never had the talent to do more than barely perceive them, and that was only with concentration. Now they’re walking around like nothing is out of the ordinary about that. That said, the actual servitude part he will be completely fine with. Jun’ichi’s willingness to put his nose to the grindstone is one of his strongest features, and working security, cleaning dishes, or scrubbing toilets are all tasks much easier to stomach than his previous line of work.

Abilities, Strengths, and Weaknesses: Jun’ichi is physically an athletic, strongly built young man in his twenties. He has no major health issues and no particularly destructive vices. He has a background in Shotokan, but he largely fell out of practice in his teenage years. In the three years he has been a yakuza he has gained notable experience in fighting. While he carries a gun, he’s not a particularly good marksman, but he’s experienced enough not to blow his own foot off or shoot someone unexpectedly.

Mentally, Jun'ichi is in theory a relatively bright young man, hampered by his own inferiority complex and a tendency to try to brute force solutions to his issues. His stubbornness makes him all too willing to stick to a path that is inadvisable for entirely too long. He relies largely on gut instinct and first impressions and is slow to adjust accordingly. This can be a blessing and a curse; he can do actions that others might deem unconscionable in the heat of the moment, as long as they fit with his goals, though this provides him no relief over possibly agonizing about these decisions later.

That said, he can be exceptionally quick-witted at times, especially when under stress. He is conversationally fluent in English, though his ability to read the language is nowhere near as strong. He is surprisingly conversant in a variety of topics, as his growing up surrounded by learned monks encouraged this, and his work as a bodyguard-slash-babysitter made this surprisingly useful. He is incredibly aware of his surroundings; this sadly does not extend to dealing with people, where Jun’ichi is almost always either frustratingly vague and aloof, or needlessly blunt and kind of a jerk. The stubbornness also lets him stick with tasks, no matter how dumb or degrading they may seem, if he thinks it is the right task: a good feature when you’ve been placed on menial labor duty.

Jun'ichi is notably completely inept at anything based on magic, to the point that the monks would not train him. He has picked up some very minor rudiments; he could prepare the paper for talismans for Seimei or another sorcerer, with concentration and a great deal of effort he can detect unmaterialized spirits or ghosts. This lack of skill and talent puts him at a great disadvantage against any supernatural opponent, which given his new line of work, is a worrisome issue.
